A teenager was killed and another person injured last weekend, after a mining pit caved in on them at Pamela, Mahdia, Region Eight.
Dead is Dennis Anthony Barker, 16, of Lot 550 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while Scotland Pluck, 20, of Number Eight Village, Berbice was injured. Barker was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia Hospital, while Pluck was admitted.
According to a police press release, around 15:40h on Saturday, the two young miners were working in a mining pit when it caved in on them. Guyana Times International understands that after the pit caved in, persons around tried to get them out, however, it took about 10 minutes before they could have rescued the two young men, and it was too late for young Barker, who suffered a broken neck.

His body was transported to Georgetown on Sunday. Derise DaSilva, the mother of the dead teen, said on Saturday around 18:00h, she received several calls from an unknown person telling her about the incident. The woman said she then called persons from the area and her worst fear was confirmed.
The woman disclosed that she lives in Linden, while her son stayed with his grandmother in Georgetown and he was supposed to stop by her on his way to Mahdia, but did not.
She last saw her son in October last year while she was in Mahdia and he visited her. The grieving mother noted that her son would usually send money for her and the last time they talked was a few days ago. He had called and asked her to send his sister there.
“I tell he if he love his sister he won’t want her to go there, that is not a nice place for her and he get vex and tell me that I won’t hear from him for a long, long time,” she continued.
Da Silva went on to say that she does not know who her son was working with, but revealed that he had been encountering problems with his employer and left to work elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the grandmother of Barker told this newspaper that her grandson used to stay with her whenever he came out from Mahdia. She explained that he had left in early January and it was his second trip to the interior location.
Dennis leaves to mourn his grandmother, parents and siblings.
